Would 7.j14 have worked better for white?

I think so. At |6.o15, Pete had a rough Y shape with the stem on the right, and the threats of N9 and something like K15 or K17 across the bottom (for example, |7.n12 8.k17 9.o14 10.p17 11.n16 12.m18). Your actual |7.n14 isn't a Y shape in return; it's just an I. It assumes your o10 peg is in a strong position, but it's not. Your suggestion |7.j14 looks much better, because it makes a Y (upright). You'd still have a threat of connecting to o10, but also a threat of something like J10 or H9.

Pete would probably respond in kind, with something that re-establishes a Y for him. For example, 7.j14 8.k8 9.q11 10.n17 11.??? Just windmilling around, but that ends on step 11, because you're out of room because of those c12, e14 pegs. But wait, I may have analyzed the situation wrong. Q11 would break the N9 threat: |7.j14 8.k8 9.q11 10.n17 11.j18 12.n9 13.m11 14.p8 15.t8 16.s4 17.q5 18.r8 19.r7 ... So that might be winning for White. But it's hard to say anything definite so early in the game, because Pete might have noticed that 9.q11 breaks the N9 threat and played something other than 10.n17. I did pick those windmill pegs a bit carelessly. I'm more cautious when I'm actually playing.
