I think I like |17.r20 better. If 18.s21 then 19.v21

What if |17.r20 18.s21 19.v21 20.r19 21.s19 22. t19

you're right -- I didn't think of that

but it looks to me like 23.v17 is an effective counter

24.v16 25.u18

for almost anything else, such as 24.u17, 25.t16 or 25.u15

and with 24.s17 the board is almost identical to the actual line |22.s17, but with 2 extra pegs and links in a probably useless spot.

In case anyone is interested, the whole reason for 12.p15 was to prevent white from moving from right side to middle, but my eventual aim at this move was to play R9 after breaking through the Achilles defense.

ok, but |23.u15 24.r9 25.s14 looks problematic for black -- I'm guessing you've got something else in mind to enable R9 after |23.u15 -- what?

After 15.u19 there are several local tactical patterns black should consider, not just 16.t17. But IMO it would be better for black to place a downstream peg for example at |16.o8 and then see how white responds to that before continuing on the bottom right. If 17.j7 18.s20 19.t21 20.t22 21.u23 22.t18 and O8 is perfectly positioned as a negative ladder catcher. Or 17.q11 18.k8 19.q7 20.r11 21.s10 22.q13 23.r16 24.k12 25.t12 26.u16, or 23.k12 24.s18 25.r20 26.s21 27.v21 28.u22 29.u23 30.t20 31.t16 32.r16 33.u14 34.t10
