Moves 1-3 very standard opening I think.

Move 4 (Black) the first close, or tactical move of the game, often the first close move means a lost game.
Most of the exceptions are capitalizing on a blunder by the opponent, and can mean the opponent has lost the game.

Did I lose this game already? Black did win.

5. Maybe I lost it here. My intention is to disconnect the two pieces already played, or if Black plays to connect, to leave nowhere for the chain to go.

6.. Maybe I did lose it then, I need either to disconnect k7 from the left edge, or from both L10 and o7 simultaneously.

7. Played k6, idea is to disconnect k7 from o7 or from left edge.

8. Connects all 3.

9. Separating o7 from the left will be hard now k7 neutralized, but L10 still a threat.

10. As we see with j11. My last three moves are neutralized, Might as well have not made them.

11. Mistakenly try to save them. g10 does not have a clear down-right (steep) line to bottom, line ends at a22, too weak.

12. h10 forks me, in effect connected to right edge.

13 Connected to top, bottom vulnerable.

14 As black demonstrates.

Nothing to do but try to disconnect o7 and right edge. If this is the right move now, it would have been better on move 6.

Game definitely already lost, but I hold out for 31 more moves.

21. o7 is now separated from right edge, but o10-p12 are weak because of the black chain at right. Black may have blundered in letting me get this far, but it is not enough to save my game.

29. first move not forced by blocking immediate connection to pieces connected to f11. Too late to block line from here on out, I am just playing to delay the win.j0

doesn't |5.s8 effectively block the right side?

Possibly. I had been thinking he went local, so maybe I should go local. my opponent either has to play below me, abandoning o7, or break through my line. I jumped the gun and thought I was in the situation he is now in. 5. s8 is definitely better than 5. l9.

Andrew how is 4.o7 the first close move? This is at a 5-1 distance from white P12, even farther away from P12 than L10 is. 5.l9 on the other hand, is indeed close, and yes I believe you had a losing position after that. You said "He went local so maybe I should go local." This early in the opening, it is much more likely that you should go global. Look at the whole board and try to make as many distinct threats as you can. I will get back to this position at move 4, but first let's look at some tactics.

|5.s8 would have been better, but it has a potential weakness. Black might respond with 6.r8. But I don't think R8 right away would be the best for black. After 7.h11 white sets a trap for black along the top: 8.i7 9.k8 10.j9 11.q9 12.p9 13.o10 white threatens T6 or M9 on the top, and how many pegs does black have in the bottom half? Zero. So instead of 6.r8, a good opening move for black would have been 6.l14. By taking control of the center this way, black threatens to connect to the left in several ways and connect to the right in several ways.

So, instead of 5.s8 white would do better to start some threats on the left, for example with |5.i10. I don't know who would have the advantage in that case.
