I'm wondering if I outsmarted myself here.

The obvious response to 17.f8 would have been 18.h9. I didn't do
this, because I saw that Maciej could exploit a gap in my line:
|18.h9 19.g11 20.g12 21.f13 22.h10 23.g10 24.f14 25.k8.

I was unreasonably scared of the double threat of k8, and made some desperate moves.

But now I kind of think I would have been OK with 18.h9. For example, if play goes as I had predicted, |18.h9 19.g11 20.g12 21.f13 22.h10 23.g10 24.f14 25.k8 could be followed by 26.i11 27.m7 28.k10, and black has two ways to connect.

Does white have a good response to |18.h9?

Just a quick note. Your suggested move 21 for Maciej looks suspect. What if |18.h9 19.g11 20.g12 21.e12 instead?

Thanks, Alan. Seems like a good move. It also seems like a very basic pattern, but I am not at all familiar with it.

This pattern with Alan's suggested 18.h9 19.g11 20.g12 21.e12 is also in puzzle 4 from the Randolph series. Thanks for allowing html tags Alan!
